As the concerto project gained traction, Orli noted an important added dimension, “Something that’s worked out particularly well is that we’ve been able to talk about all sorts of things, on a personal level.” Orli and Steve had gotten to know each other musically at that first concert together in Aspen in 2007. Then Steve and his wife Sarah had a baby not long after Orli and David’s twin boys were born. “When their son arrived, he was born a little early, so the beginning was difficult,” Orli explained. “We were still in that baby phase, too, so all four of us bonded over that. It became a very personal relationship.”
Orli notes that there were specific aspects to her playing that Steve liked immediately. “Things about the color of the sound I like to make on piano. Ways in which I like to voice the chords, and bring out different voices within the chords,” she explains. “And I thought, that’s great, these are things really important to me. It’s great that he appreciates them.”
